Chronic pain is said to be suffered by up to 88 percent of seniors and many are now looking towards CBD to help aid in this pain. As CBD’s popularity continues to rise, you may be asking: What is CBD? What are the benefits and side effects? How many seniors are actually experiencing a decrease in their pain levels?
61.1% of Seniors Reduced Their Pain with CBDRemedy Review studied “over 1,000 seniors, all of who were at least 54 years old, by asking them questions about their CBD usage and the associated benefits and side effects.” Over 65% of the seniors who have tried CBD reported: “their quality of life was good, whereas just 31.1 percent said it was the same before trying CBD.” Out of the 1,047 seniors studied in this survey, 54.4% prefer CBD drops orally, 21.1% chose CBD drops in their beverages, 21.1% enjoy CBD-infused edibles, 15.6% take CBD capsules, and 10% smoke/vape CBD. Nearly 3 in 4 seniors experienced zero side effects after trying it. For those who did experience side effects, 12.4% reported a dry mouth, 6.7% had a change in appetite, and 5.6% experienced fatigue. The top benefits of CBD usage cited by seniors was 61.1% reduced their pain (often applied as topicals and cooling gels), 45.6% improved their quality of sleep, 30% reduced anxiety, another 30% experienced stress relief, 23.3% had a more positive mood, 7.8% improved cognitive functions, 7.8% also increased their appetite, and 5.6% lowered their blood pressure. Overall, 78% of seniors were satisfied with trying CBD with only 16.7% of seniors experiencing no benefits.
What’s the Science Behind CBD and Will I Get High?
To answer your first concern… unlike THC, CBD will not get you high as most products contain zero THC. You will not experience any psychoactive side effects. The science behind Phytocannabinoids (CBD) alleviating relief is that they can be used to supplement or replace chemicals inside of our bodies, called endocannabinoids. When the nervous system or immune system do not work as intended due to endocannabinoid deficiency, phytocannabinoids can be used as supplements to help with restoring the proper functionality of the central nervous system and immune system. Phytocannabinoids activate CB1 and CB2 receptors which in turn, regulate cognitive and immune functions. Research has shown that when cannabinoids interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system, CBD affects brain chemistry and contains anti-inflammatory potential properties aiding in appetite, mood, anxiety, stress, pain, and sleep disorders. (Lewis, M. 2019). Several in vitro and in vivo research projects have shown potential benefits of CBD having anti-seizure properties, blocking cell growth, preventing the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors, relieving muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, acne, and smoking cessation (Cancer Treatment & Cannabis Oil, 2018). CBD’s naturally occuring chemical compound can be used in products for both humans and animals in the form of tinctures, oils, softgels, topicals, hemp pellets, gummies, edibles, and more. Research continues to show results of CBD helping various conditions effectively with the occasional case of non serious side effects such as tiredness, diarrhea, changes in appetite, and weight (Consumer Reports, 2018).
Creating a Demand for CBD
The future of medical treatments is creating a demand for more holistic alternatives to prescription medications. The interest in cannabinoids extends well beyond the senior demographic helping many people find solace and relief for symptoms like insomnia, pain relief, and stress. As the shocking number of opioid dependence and abuse continues to increase, researchers have been desperately searching for safer alternatives of treatment to prevent the continuation of addiction and abuse. CBD may become a favorited natural and safe alternative.
